How to crochet an Asphodel

A humble plant very common here in Sardinia that grows in arid and stony soils now too exploited by grazing. In the past, the Asfodelo was used by farmers to create artifacts for daily use that today furnish rustic kitchens. Its flowers are very popular with bees who, with their incessant work, produce a much appreciated honey.

To make the crochet Asphodel, you need to prepare the flower, the pistil, the bud and the leaves which are of 3 different sizes.

Needed: cotton number 20 - 1.0 mm crochet hook - 0.45 mm galvanized iron wire - scissors - needle - cotton wool - plasticized iron wire - pliers - glue.

Explanation of the flower

Start 5 chains and close them in a circle.

1st round: 12 single crochet.

2nd round: 10 chains and in these make 9 single crochet, skip 1 basic stitch, 1 slip stitch. Repeat the same for a total of 6 times.

3rd round: 1 single crochet, 5 half double crochets, 1 single crochet, 2 slip stitches. Repeat the same as the other side in reverse (therefore start from the 2 slip stitches). Repeat the same for a total of 6 times.

Cut pieces of brown cotton that are the length of the petal. Glue them to the center of the petal lengthwise, both on the outside and on the inside.

Explanation of the pistil

Start 12 chains and in these make 10 slip stitches, 1 slip stitch in the first chain stitch. 11 chain stitches and in these make 10 slip stitches, 1 slip stitch in the first initial chain stitch. Repeat the same for a title of 6 times. On the tip of the pistils, with the yellow cotton, make 4-5 stitches.

Cut about 5 cm of galvanized iron wire and wrap a little yellow cotton in the center to form a ball. Twist the wire around itself for about 1 cm. The remaining wire will be used to tie the flower to the stem. Insert the pistil and the flower. Cover the joining stem with cotton by working the chains around it. Make all the flowers you need for your composition.

Explanation of the bud

Start 4 chains and in the first make 9 double crochet (total 10).

1st round: 15 double crochet (make an increase every 2 points).

2nd round: 15 double crochet. Cut about 5 cm of galvanized iron wire and wrap a bit of cotton wool in the center. Twist the wire around itself for about 1 cm. Insert it into the bud and close the second round.

3rd round: 2 double crochet closed together for the whole round

4th round: 3-4 slip stitch.

Cover the joining stem with cotton by working the chains around it.

Cut 4 pieces of brown cotton and glue them to the bud lengthwise.

To make the bud without the joining stem follow the same explanation without using the iron wire. Glue 8 pieces of brown cotton lengthwise.

Make all the buds you need for your composition.

Cut a piece of plasticized iron wire of the appropriate length and thickness for the work being carried out. Bend a tip twice with the help of pliers. Insert a bud worked up to the second round and then continue with the same procedure.

For the secondary branches to be connected to the main stem, use a thinner plasticized wire and follow the same procedure.

Immediately under the bud that is at the top of the stem, glue the buds without joining stem. Then connect the buds with the union stems and then the flowers alternating their position.

Cover the secondary branch with cotton by working the chains around it. Model everything with your hands. Make all the secondary branches you need for your composition.

Also assemble the main stem and connect the secondary branches. Cover it too with cotton working the chains around it, except about 3 cm that will be inserted into the vase.

Explanation of the large leaf

Start 71 chain stitches.

Cut a piece of galvanized iron wire that goes around the complete chain plus about 2 cm more per side.

Insert it to them by working around 70 single crochet on one side and 70 single crochet on the other.

1st round: 10 triple crochet, 15 double crochet, 15 half double crochet, 15 single crochet, 15 slip stitch. Repeat the same way on the other side in reverse (then start from 15 slip stitches). Stretch the leaf well by shaping it with your hands and twist the remaining wire on itself.

Explanation of the middle leaf

The procedure is the same as for the large leaf, only the points change.

Start 51 chains.

1st round: 10 triple crochet, 10 double crochet, 10 half double crochet, 10 single crochet, 10 slip stitch.

Explanation of the small leaf

The procedure is the same as for the large leaf, only the points change.

Start 31 chains.

1st round: 5 double crochet, 5 half double crochet, 10 single crochet, 10 slip stitch. Make all the leaves you need for your composition.

Arrange the complete stem in the center of the pot and all around the leaves in ascending order.

As always I hope to have explained everything to the best and to have given you one more idea.

Hello everyone to the next creation.
