How to crochet a wild iris

Also known as the "lily of the poor" or "castagnole" because in the past at times of famine the bulbs were harvested to be eaten cooked like chestnuts.
The wild iris here in Sardinia grows along the sandy coasts and near the salt marshes. In spring the little flowers open in all their beauty but only for half a day.
To make the crochet wild iris it is necessary to prepare: the flower which is composed of two sections, the bud and the leaves which are of two different sizes.

Needed: cotton number 20 - crochet 1.0mm - scissors - galvanized iron wire 0.45mm - cotton wool - plasticized iron wire - pliers.
Explanation of the internal section

Start 9 chains and in these do: 7 single crochet, 1 slip stitch in the first chain. Then make 8 chains and in these do: 7 single crochet, 1 slip stitch in the first chain. Repeat the same again.
1st round: 3 single crochet, 2 half double crochet, 3 double crochet at one point, 3 triple crochet and 1 double triple crochet at one point. Repeat the same on the other side in reverse. Do the same two more times.

Explanation of the external section

Start 6 chains and in these do: 4 single crochet, 1 slip stitch in the first chain. 5 chains and in these to do: 4 single crochet, 1 slip stitch in the first chain. Repeat the same again. Cotton color change.
1st round: 2 single crochet, 1 half double crochet and 1 double crochet at one point, 3 triple crochet at one point. Repeat the other side upside down 3 times in total. Cotton color change.
2nd round: 3 single crochet, 2 half double crochet at one point, 2 double crochet at one point, 3 triple crochet at one point, 3 double triple crochet and 1 triple triple crochet point at a point. Repeat the other side upside down 3 times in total.

Explanation of the bud

Start 4 chains and in the first make 11 double crochet (total 12).
1st and 2nd round: 12 double crochet. Cut about 10 cm of galvanized iron wire and wrap some cotton wool or cotton wool in the middle. Using a pair of pliers, wrap the wire around itself for about 1 cm, thus creating the small stem of the bud and blocking the wadding. Insert it into the bud making the stem come out from underneath.
3rd and 4th lap: 2 double crochet closed together for the whole lap.
Cover the small stem with the cotton, working the chains around it. The remaining wire will be used to tie the bud to the stem of the flower.

To make the stem of the flower, cut a piece of plasticized wire of the appropriate length and thickness. On a point wrap a little yellow cotton. Using a pair of pliers to bend the tip twice to block the cotton and have a small pistil.
Insert the inner section into the stem and then the outer section. Fasten the bud and cover the stem with cotton, working the chains around it except for about 2 cm, which will be inserted into the vase.

Explanation of the large leaf

Start 50 chains. Cut a piece of galvanized iron wire that makes the complete turn of the chains and place it around them working 49 single crochet on one side and 49 on the other. Make a slip stitch to get to the other side.
1st round: 2 chains to replace the first half double crochet, a total of 29 half double crochet, 10 single crochet, 10 slip stitch. Do the same on the other side in reverse. Stretch the leaf well and twist the remaining wire for about 2 cm on itself, it will be used to insert the leaf into the vase.

Explanation of the medium leaf

The procedure is the same as the large leaf, only a few points change.
The chains will be 30, the single crochet 29. In the first round the half double crochet will be 9, the single crochet 10 and the slip stitch 10.
Make all the leaves needed to make up the wild iris plant.
Insert the flowers in the center of the vase and around the leaves.
Shape everything with your hands.

I hope I gave you an extra idea and explained everything to the fullest.
I wish everyone good creation.
Goodbye see you soon.
