Crochet fat plant explanation: Eulychnia

It has a particular shape that makes it sought after and much appreciated by collectors. The Eulychnia castanea (unfortunately I did not find a counterpart in Italian) has the characteristic of growing slowly, overlapping its green rings one above the other.
Eulychnia castanea is the third plant that is part of the composition of crochet fat plants 2020.
To make crocheted Eulychnia it is necessary to prepare the sections of the plant of four different sizes, the thorn sections of five different sizes.
Needed: cotton number 10 and number 20 - crochet 1.0mm - scissors - plasticized wire - wadding - pliers.

For the sections of the plant I used cotton number 10, for thorns the number 20.

Explanation of the first section of the plant

Start 4 chains and in the first make 11 double crochet (total 12).
1st round: 24 double crochet.
2nd round: 48 double crochet.
3rd and 4th lap: 48 double crochet.
5th lap: 2 double crochet closed together for the whole lap.
Make a total of 3 sections.

Stuff with cotton wool or cotton wool and shape with your hands to give it the right shape.
In the first section, the one that will rest on the vase, insert a piece of curved fork-shaped plastic wire with the cotton wool. It will be used to insert the plant in the vase.

Start 4 chains and in the first make 9 double crochet (total 10).

1st round: 20 double crochet.
2nd round: 40 double crochet.
3rd and 4th round: 40 double crochet.
5th lap: 2 double crochet closed together for the whole lap.
Make a total of 3 sections.

Start 4 chains and in the first do 7 double crochet (total 8).

1st round: 16 double crochet.
2nd round: 32 double crochet.
3rd and 4th lap: 32 double crochet.
5th lap: 2 high points closed together for the whole lap.

Explanation of the fourth section of the plant

Start 4 chains and in the first do 7 double crochet (total 8).

1st round: 16 double crochet.
2nd round: 24 double crochet (increase every 3 points).
3rd and 4th round: 24 double crochet.
5th lap: 2 double crochet closed together for the whole lap.
Stuffing and shaping.

The thorn sections are of 5 different sizes. For each there is a ring of low points where to make thorns. The plugs are the same for all the sections but positioned at scattered intervals, without any specific order.

For my composition I make them of three different lengths.

For large spines make 9 chains and in these do: 6 slip stitch and 6 single crochet.

For medium spines make 7 chains and in these do: 4 slip stitch and 2 single crochet.

For small spines make 5 chains and in these do: 2 slip stitch and 2 single crochet.

In the spaces between the thorns (in the single crochet below) work slip stitch.

Explanation of the first section of thorns

Start 43 chains

1st round: 42 single crochet. Insert the hook in the first single crochet and make 1 slip stitch to make a circle.
2nd round: make thorns in random order.
Make a total of 2 sections.

Explanation of the second section of thorns

Start 35 chains

1st round: 34 single crochet. Insert the hook in the first single crochet and make 1 slip stitch to create a circle.
2nd round: make thorns in random order.
Make a total of 3 sections.

Explanation of the third section of thorns

Start 27 chains.

1st round: 26 single crochet. Insert the hook in the first single crochet and make 1 slip stitch to create a circle.
2nd round: make thorns in random order.

Explanation of the fourth section of thorns

Start 19 chains.

1st round: 18 single crochet. Insert the hook in the first single crochet and make 1 slip stitch to create a circle.
2nd round: make thorns in random order.

Explanation of the fifth section of thorns

Start 8 chains.

1st round: 7 single crochet. Insert the hook in the first low point and make 1 slip stitch to create a circle.
2nd round: make thorns in random order.

To assemble the Eulychnia take the first section of plant (the one that will be inserted in the vessel). Position above (in the center) the first section of spines and, above this, another section of plan of the first section. Sew the two sections of plant with the section of thorns in the middle. Continue with another section of plant alternating with the section of thorns. Arrange them in descending order. On the top sew the fifth section of thorns with 2-3 points.

Shape everything with your hands giving a homogeneous shape to the sections of the plant and straighten the spines.
