Crochet fat plant explanation: Crassula

A chubby evergreen native to South Africa that is now widespread even in our homes. Crassula is also known as "Jade tree". During the flowering period, during the spring and all summer, it gives us some pretty bunches of white stars.
Crassula is the fourth plant that is part of the composition of crochet fat plants 2020.
To make the Crassula crochet it is necessary to prepare the flower which is composed of a section of petals and a central section, the leaves which are of three different sizes.

Needs: cotton number 10 and number 20 - crochet 1.0 mm - scissors - needle - galvanized iron wire 0.45 mm - cotton wool - plasticized iron wire - pliers.
To make the leaves I used cotton number 10, for the rest the number 20.

Explanation of the section of petals

Start 5 chains and close them in a circle.

1st round: 7 chains and in these do: 3 single crochet, 3 half double crochet, 1 slip stitch. Repeat the same for a total of 5 petals.

Explanation of the central section

Start 5 chains and close them in a circle.

1st round: 2 small chains, 1 half double crochet, 2 chains, 1 slip stitch. Repeat the same for a total of 5 times.

To create the small stem of each little flower, cut about 6 cm of galvanized iron wire. At about 2 cm from a tip, wrap cotton several times to form a small ball that will be the pistil of the flower. Block the cotton by twisting the wire over itself 2-3 times. Cut the cotton and the shorter piece of the remaining wire. Place the middle section and then the petals section in order. Cover the cotton wire with the chains around it for about 2 cm. The rest will be used to fasten the flowers between them.

Make bunches of 2-3 flowers each by twisting each wire for 3-4 times and each time cutting the extra wire (only one will remain).

When connecting the last small flower of the bunch continue to fasten the wire for about 2 cm to create a single stem that will then be connected to the stem.

Create all the bunches of flowers for your composition.

To create the central stem, cut 3 pieces of plasticized wire of the same thickness but of different lengths. There will be one of about 30 cm, one of 20 and one of 10. Join them at the bottom in the part that will be inserted in the vase with a piece of galvanized iron wire. Using a pair of pliers to bend the highest point to form a small knot. Fasten the first bunch of small flowers near the curve, at the same time as the second piece of plasticized iron, fasten the other bundle. Cover the cotton stem by working the chains around it. Leave about 2-3 cm uncovered which will be the ones that will be placed in the jar.

Explanation of the small leaf

Start 10 chains.

1st round: 1 single crochet, 1 half double crochet, 2 double crochet at one point, 3 triple crochet, 2 double crochet at one point, 1 half double crochet, 1 single crochet. Repeat on the other side of the chains. Without cutting the cotton make another identical leaf. Close the job by keeping the cotton a little long. Join the 2 leaves to create a single leaf. Sew a part sideways, place some cotton wool in the center of the leaf before sewing the other side as well.

Each leaf will be sewn to the stem one in front of the other alternating in height.

Explanation of the medium leaf

Start 14 chains.

1st round: 1 single crochet, 1 half double crochet, 2 double crochet at one point, 7 triple crochet points, 2 double crochet at one point, 1 half double crochet, 1 single crochet. Repeat on the other side of the chains.

Continue with the same procedure as the small leaf.

Explanation of the large leaf

Start 18 chains.

1st round: 1 single crochet, 1 half double crochet, 2 double crochet at one point, 2 triple crochet, 2 triple crochet at one point, 5 double triple crochet, 2 triple crochet at one point, 2 triple crochet , 2 double crochet at a point, 1 half double crochet, 1 single crochet. Repeat on the other side of the chains.

Continue with the same procedure as the small leaf.

Make all the leaves you need for your crassula.

Sew the small leaves on top near the first bunch of flowers. Immediately under some medium leaves and lower the large leaves.

Arrange the flowers and shape the leaves with your hands giving it the right shape.

For the side branches, to be placed next to the central branch of the crassula, use only a piece of plasticized iron wire.

Of course you are free to modify and personalize your crassula, with higher or lower stems, with flowers or only with leaves. Or to be included in a composition with other succulent plants.
