How to crochet a Sunflower

I have always admired the proud and elegant way in which this plant always seeks the sun in the sky. The sunflower is the flower symbol of the brightness, vivacity and joy typical of the summer season. An extraordinary plant not only for its beauty but also for the precious seeds that it offers us.

To make the crochet sunflower, prepare 2 sections of petals, a central section, the calyx and the leaves with its stem.

In this composition there are sunflowers of 2 different sizes, one large and one medium.

For the central section I used cotton number 20, for everything else the number 10.
Needs: cotton number 20 and number 10 - 1.0mm crochet hook - scissors - needle - 0.45mm galvanized iron wire - plasticized iron wire - cotton wool - pliers.

Explanation of the section of petals for the big sunflower.

Start 34 little chains and close them in a circle.

1 lap: 33 single crochet (make a single crochet in each chain below).

2 rounds: 2 single crochet, a slip stitch, 15 little chains and in these make 14 single crochet. Repeat the same for a total of 12 times.

3 lap: 2 slip stitch, in the 14 single crochet do: a single crochet, a half double crochet, 2 double crochet in one point, 5 triple crochet, 2 double crochet in one point, a double crochet, 2 half double crochet, 2 single crochet. Redo equal to the other side. Repeat the same for a total of 12 petals.

Make another equal section.

Explanation of the petals section of the medium sunflower.

Start 25 little chains and close them in a circle.

1 turn: 24 single crochet (make a single crochet in each chain).

From the second round resume the explanation of the section of petals for the large sunflower, since the petals are identical. Only the quantity varies, in the average sunflower there are 9 petals instead of 12. Also for this we will make 2 equal sections.

Explanation of the central section for large sunflower.

Start 100 little chains.

1 round: 98 half double crochet. Turn the job.

2 rounds: 4 little chains, a single crochet in the first of the 4 little chains, a single crochet. Repeat the same for the whole turn. Close the work holding the cotton a little 'long, wrap on itself the spiral that has been formed to give it the round shape holding the pippiolini at the top. Keep it steady by checking from below that the edges are close but without pulling too much. Sew from below by joining the edges.

Start 70 little chains.

1 round: 68 half double crochet. Continue with the explanation of the central section of the large sunflower.

Now let's assemble the flower. Place the sections of petals on top of each other in a staggered manner. Put the middle section in the center and sew it to the 2 sections of petals in the last border. The procedure is the same for all 2 sunflowers.

Explanation of the glass for the big sunflower.

Start 4 little chains and make 16 double crochet in the first.

1 round: 32 double crochet.

2 rounds: 7 little chains and in these: 2 single crochet, 2 half double crochet, 2 double crochet, jump 3 base points, a slip stitch. Repeat equal for a total of 8 points.

3 round: Fold back the tips and make 32 double crochet.

4 rounds: 3 slip stitch, 7 little chains and in these: 2 single crochet, 2 half double crochet, 2 double crochet, jump 3 base points, a slip stitch. Repeat equal a total of 8 times. Close the job.

Explanation of the glass of medium sunflower.

Start 4 little chains and make 12 double crochet in the first.

1 round: 24 double crochet.

From the second round continue with the explanation of the large sunflower cup because the work is the same, only the tips that instead of 8 will vary 6.

Cut a piece of plasticized iron wire of the appropriate length and thickness to the work you are doing. Curve a point forming a ring (help yourself with a forceps) a little smaller than the circumference of the glass where it will be inserted. Stuff the glass (with the wire inside) with a little cotton wool and sew it to the flower, positioning it well in the middle.

Shape the tips of the cup and the petals of the flower with your hands. If you see that it does not take the form (much depends on the type of cotton used) you can starch both the glass and the petals.

Explanation of the leaf.

Start 20 little chains. Cut a piece of galvanized iron wire that makes the complete turn of the 20 chains, three or four centimeters each side, and insert it to the leaf, around the first turn around it.

1 lap: one single crochet, one half double crochet, one double crochet, 7 triple crochet, 3 double crochet, 3 half double crochet, 3 single crochet. Redo equal to the other side.

2 rounds: 2 single crochet at one point, 2 half double crochet at one point, 2 double crochet at one point, 2 triple crochet at one stitch for 7 times, 3 double crochet, 3 half double crochet, 3 single crochet. Redo equal to the other side.

Wrap the iron wire around for about one cm and work around the chains so that the small stem joins the leaf. Close the job.

Connect the leaves to the stem alternately and cover it with cotton, working around the chains, except for the 3 cm that will be inserted into the vase.

As always I hope I have explained everything to the best and have given you an idea in a more that you can modify and customize according to your imagination.

Hello to all and see you next time.
